This Piragua de Menta is a Mint Shaved Ice that has a very delicious flavor. It has a very refreshing taste that comes from the mint. The best part is that is made with only 4 ingredients.

A mint flavor puerto rican piragua or mint shaved ice with a syrup bottle on the back.

This Mint Shaved Ice will surprise you because of how good it is. This Piragua de menta is not as popular as other flavors, but it should be.

The homemade mint syrup is just as easy to make as the strawberry shaved ice or the Puerto Rican blueberry piragua because you only need water, sugar, flavor, and coloring.

    Recipe Ingredients

All the ingredients needed to make a puerto rican piragua mint flavor.
    • Sugar & water- You’ll need 1 part sugar and 1 part water.
    • Mint extract- The extract is how we add the flavor.
    • Green food coloring- You can leave it out, but I like to add the food coloring.
    • Ice- Always expect to use a little more than what you think you need. Usually, you’ll need twice the amount of ice as the size of the cup you have in ice.

    • Photo 1: In a small pot, add the water and sugar to cook for 5 minutes, and make sure to stir. Remove the syrup from the heat and add the food coloring and mint extract. Mix until the syrup has a uniform color. Then let it cool.
    • Photo 2: Transfer the syrup to a bottle or an airtight container. Keep it in the fridge until you’re ready to use.

    Recipe Tips

    • Sugar free version- Use granulated stevia or splenda for sugar to make this mint syrup sugar-free. Use half of what the recipe needs of white sugar.
    • Ice- Don’t crush the ice too much because your piragua will become watery faster.
    • Buying the syrup- If you don’t want to make the syrup, you can buy a mint flavor syrup online. My favorite brand is Poly Sirops that are made in Puerto Rico.

    Instructions

    Mint Syrup

    • In a small saucepan, add sugar and water, over high heat, and cook for 5 minutes. Stir constantly for the first 2 minutes to make sure the sugar dissolves. Remove from the heat.
    • Stir in the food coloring and extract. Allow it to cool before storing. Use an airtight container, a glass bottle, or a jar to store it, and keep it in the fridge.

    Piragua

    • Add the ice to a blender and crush it. Add the crushed ice to a cup and put extra ice on top. Make a piramid/dome shape on top with a spoon, a funnel, or your clean hands. Add about half a cup of the syrup (the amount can change depending on your cup size). ¡Buen Provecho!

    Recipe Notes

    • Sugar free version- You need to make the syrup sugar free by eliminating the white sugar. Instead use granulated stevia or splenda. You need to use half of what you would’ve needed of white sugar.
    • You have to elimanate the white sugar when making the syrup. Use granulated stevia or splenda. You only need half the sugar of what the recipe needs.
    • Ice- The amount of ice will vary depending on the cup you use. I use the same cup I’m using and fill it up twice with ice. This is enough to fill up the cup and make a little dome shape on top.
    • Food coloring- If you want, you can use way less food coloring. A few drops get the liquid green. Start with a few drops to see if you like it and go from there. You can also just leave it out if you prefer.
