This Sweet Teriyaki Chicken is better than takeout! It is made with simple ingredients that are easy to get and that you probably already have at home. The best part is that it is made in under 25 minutes!

This Sweet Teriyaki Chicken is a delicious, simple chicken recipe that you can make at home. The recipe is more of an American chicken teriyaki recipe.
It is made with chicken thighs, and the sauce is a basic teriyaki sauce made with water, sugar, soy, garlic, and cornstarch. We don’t use the traditional sake because it can be hard to get depending on where you live.
I started making this recipe because I wanted to eat the same chicken teriyaki you can get at the mall and restaurants. Now when I make it, I always serve it with some broccoli and my fried rice recipe.

Recipe Ingredients

- Chicken- I used boneless chicken thighs because they tend to stay juicier than chicken breast. But you can use chicken breast if you want. Then it is simply seasoned with salt, pepper, sugar, chicken bouillon, sesame oil, soy sauce, and msg. If you don’t consume msg, you can leave it out.
- Sauce- The sauce is very simple because you only need water, soy sauce, sugar, garlic paste, and cornstarch.
How to Make Sweet Teriyaki Chicken

- Photo 1: Cut the chicken into thin strips. You can cut the chicken into squares. The shape is just a preference. Then, season the chicken.
- Photo 2: In a small pot over high heat, add all the sauce ingredients except the cornstarch. You need to cook this for 5 minutes, then mix the cornstarch with a little bit of the sauce in a separate dish. Mix in the cornstarch and finish cooking for 1 minute.

- Photo 3: Add the oil to a pan over medium heat. Once it gets hot, add the chicken. Cook for 12 minutes and flip every 3 minutes so the chicken can brown evenly.
- Photo 4: Shut off the heat and add the sauce. Stir to combine the chicken and sauce. If you want a thicker sauce, turn on the heat until your sauce thickens more.
Recipe Tips
- Add vegetables. You can add broccoli, carrots, mushrooms, onions, and peppers. They’re all super delicious.
- Don’t marinate. Don’t be tempted to marinate the chicken in the sauce. This is because the sugar in the recipe will caramelize and burn. Trust me, I’ve done it before!
- Freeze. The best part of this recipe is that you can freeze any leftovers. First, let the chicken cool completely and then store in a freezer bag or airtight container. Safe for 3 months.

Teriyaki Chicken
Ingredients
Chicken
- 1 pound boneless chicken thighs
- 1 tablespoon oil
- 1 ¼ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
- 2 teaspoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon chicken bouillon
- 1 teaspoon msg
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- 1 teaspoon soy sauce
Instructions
- Prepare chicken. Cut the chicken into about ½ inch strips. The cutting style is just a preference. You can cut it into any shape. Season the chicken with salt, pepper, sugar, chicken bouillon, msg, sesame oil, and soy sauce.
- Cook the chicken. In a pan over medium heat, add the oil and wait for the pan to get hot. Once the pan is hot, add the chicken. Cook the chicken for 12 minutes and flip every 3 minutes so it can brown evenly. You can cook your chicken for 3 more minutes if you want to add more color.
- Make the sauce. While the chicken cooks, we make the sauce to save time. In a small pan over high heat, add the water, soy sauce, sugar, and garlic paste, and mix. Stir while cooking to help the sugar dissolve. Cook for 5 minutes. In a separate small dish, mix the cornstarch with about 2 tablespoons of the sauce. Add the cornstarch slurry to the sauce and mix. Cook for 1 minute.
- Mix chicken and sauce. Once the chicken is cooked, turn off the heat, add the sauce, and mix for about 1 minute. If you want your sauce to thicken a little more, turn on the heat and cook until the sauce thickens. ¡Buen provecho!
Recipe Notes
- Chicken- I used boneless chicken thighs, but if you don’t like dark meat, you can use chicken breast.
- Sauce- With this recipe, you’ll get about 1 cup of sauce. You only need about ½ cup, but the extra sauce is great to pour over rice or vegetables. If you just want to make the exact amount you need, just use half the sauce recipe.
