This is a Simple Teriyaki Sauce that is super delicious and versatile. But the best part is that it is a sauce made with ingredients that you can find in any local supermarket.

A jar full os sweet teriyaki sauce and a spoon dripping sauce.

This is a recipe for a Simple Teriyaki Sauce that you can easily make. This is not traditional by any means, so it has no sake or mirin. Mainly because these are very hard to find ingredients.

This is a more Americanized version, a teriyaki sauce very similar to those you can find in supermarkets or sold with chicken in the mall food court.

I love this recipe because not only is easy, and delicious but is versitile. You can make a chicken teriyaki or a teriyaki chicken sandwich, but also great with vegetables.

I will even use it as a glaze for a ham with pineapple.

    Recipe Ingredients

All the ingredients needed to make a sweet teriyaki sauce.
    • Water- In this recipe, we use more water than soy because we don’t want the sauce to be too salty.
    • Soy sauce- I use regular soy sauce, but if you’re trying to make a low-sodium version, make sure to get the low-sodium soy sauce.
    • Garlic paste- The fresher the garlic paste, the better tasting your sauce will be. I like using fresh grated garlic, but if all you have is the store-bought garlic paste, use that.
    • Cornstarch- We add a little bit of cornstarch so we can get the right texture.

How to Make A Simple Teriyaki Sauce

Collage on how to make a teriyaki sauce and on the left adding sugar and adding a cornstarch slurry on the right.
    • Photo 1: In a small pot over high heat, add the water, soy, sugar, and garlic paste. Mix and cook for 5 minutes while occasionally stirring.
    • Photo 2: Take some of the sauce and, in a separate dish, mix the cornstarch and sauce. This is so we can prevent the cornstarch from clumping. Add it to the sauce and finish cooking for 1 minute while stirring. Wait for the sauce to cool and store.

    Recipe Tips

    • Make a sweeter version. You can make a sweeter version of this teriyaki sauce by adding ¼ cup more sugar to the recipe.
    • Storage. Store your homemade teriyaki sauce for up to a week in your fridge.

    Ingredients

    • 1 ½ cup water
    • ½ cup soy sauce
    • ½ cup sugar
    • 1 teaspoon garlic paste
    • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
Prevent your screen from going dark

    Instructions

    • In a small pan over high heat, add the water, soy sauce, sugar, and garlic paste. Stir and cook for 5 minutes.
    • Take about 2 tablespoons of the sauce and mix it in a separate dish with the cornstarch. Mix until all the cornstarch has dissolved and then add it to the sauce. Cook for 1 minute while stirring.
    • Let the sauce cool and store it in your fridge. Buen provecho!

    Recipe Notes

    • Sweeter version. Just add ¼ more of sugar.
    • Storage. Make sure to store it in an airtight container, like a jar or bowl, for no more than 1 week. What I like to do is to pour my leftover sauce in a mason jar and freeze for up to 6 months.
