All you need is 4 simple ingredients and 10 minutes or less to make a big bottle of the Mint Simple Syrup. All of this is made at only a fraction of the cost you’d pay at the supermarket.

Most people buy flavored syrups because they think they’re hard to make. But like most, the Mint Simple Syrup is very easy to make. Perfect for making a refreshing Puerto Rican mint shaved ice or mint limber.
This mint syrup is great for making the popular dirty sodas or a flavored lemonade. Most of the time, this syrup is used for cocktails like a mojito.
But as a lover of the combination of chocolate and mint, my top drinks to add this syrup to are a cup of hot chocolate, a delicious Nutella cocktail, or a Puerto Rican coquito with mint.

Recipe Ingredients

- Water- I use 1 part water along with 1 part sugar. If this were a milky syrup, then we just substitute water for milk.
- Sugar- I like using just plain granulated sugar.
- Mint extract- Here, the extract is the one responsible for the minty flavor because we’re not using fresh mint.
- Green food coloring-The food coloring is more of a preference, so it can be eliminated if you like.
How to Make A Mint Syrup
- Step 1: Add the sugar and water into a small pot and cook for 5 minutes while stirring for the first 2. This will simmer, and then remove the syrup from the heat.
- Step 2: Add the extract and the food coloring and mix. Let the syrup cool before transferring it into a bottle, jar, or any airtight container.
Do I need fresh mint to make a syrup?
- You can use fresh mint to make the syrup, but you don’t have to. The difference is that if using the mint extract, you don’t need the fresh mint. If you use the fresh herb, don’t use the extract.
Sugar-free version
- To make the syrup sugar-free, substitute the sugar for stevia or Splenda. But we have to use less because sugar substitutes are super sweeter. Use half of the sugar that the recipe calls for.
Recipe Tips
- Bottles- I like using any type of glass jar or bottle to store it, but plastic is fine to use. Just keep in mind that the plastic can retain the minty smell after it is used.
- Storing- Keep for 2 weeks in your fridge.

Frequently Asked Questions
If you want to make a simple syrup, 1 part water to 1 part sugar will do. If you want to make a thicker syrup more like a corn syrup, use 1 part water to 2 parts sugar.
You can thicken your syrup by adding a teaspoon of cornstarch. You can also add xanthan gum. But it must be used in small quantities. This is because the xanthan gum only needs a little bit.
