Have you ever had Cheese Dogs Puerto Rico Style? They’re super delicious hot dogs wrapped in cheese and a flaky crispy dough!
These Cheese Dogs Puerto Rico Style are similar to a piggy in a blanket. They are a chinchorro food made with hot dogs, and cheese wrapped in a pastelillo dough.
Even though I love cheese dogs is been a while since I had one until I made this recipe. I remember that around the years 2014-2015, I used to make this almost every week.
But it was a different cheesedog version I made with Titi Evita and we would add some picadillo. She named them cheesedoglillos and they’re so good!
Chesedogs are part of the delicious Puerto Rican street food list. As popular as the Puerto Rican papas rellenas or Puerto Rican loaded hotdogs.

Why This Recipe Works
- It is a finger food that you can easily make in 15 minutes or less!
- This is a great recipe to make ahead of time to serve as party food.
Recipe Ingredients
- Hot dogs- The hotdogs that are usually used are the most economical ones you can find but you can use your preferred brand.
- Pastelillo disk- Try to buy the big ones. This usually is found in the freezer section if your supermarket sells it. If you can’t find any then make your masa with the recipe that I have here in the blog. Just search masa de empanadillas.
- Cheese- I used cheese slices but you can also use a cheese spread like the cheese wiz kind or a cheese sauce.
Variations
- Hot dog- While this is traditionally made with hotdogs you can add your favorite sausage. A longaniza is a great option.
- Meat- You can try my variation and add ground beef or even bacon!
How to Make Puerto Rican Cheese Dogs
- Photo 1: First, I like to cook the hotdogs. I do 1 minute on the microwave but you can also use a pan. Then take a plantilla dough, add a slice of cheese, and start to roll.
- Photo 2: Try to tuck all the cheese inside and once you’re at the end, light wet it so it can stick better.
- Photo 3: Press the sides with your fingers to close but if you see that they open up just lightly wet the inside so it can stick. Then with a fork seal the very ends. I like to run my fork in the middle seam also to make it stick better and avoid my cheesedog from opening.
- Photo 4: In a big pan add your oil on medium-high heat. fry for 2 minutes on each side. Don’t fry it for too long because then the outer shell will be very hard. If your pan is big enough, you can fry them all together.
Recipe Tips
- While this is a recipe that is usually fried, you can also cook in an air fryer.
- Try to use a big plantilla dough so you have more room for your hotdog and cheese.

Instructions
- Cook your hot dogs in the microwave for 1 minute. Take disk and place a slice of cheese and a hot dog.

Recipe Notes
- Substitutions- You can use the hot dog brand that you prefer and the same goes for the cheese. I sometimes like to use cheese spread or cheese sauce instead of slices.
- Variations- You can make my favorite variation by adding ground beef. Another good addition is bacon!
