Nothing more delicious to eat than a Puerto Rican Hot Dog. A simple meal with the flavors of the Caribbean all made in 15 minutes!
Hot dogs are good but a Puerto Rican Hot Dog is even better! Hot dogs are a popular summer food, especially on the 4th of July.
But in Puerto Rico is a popular street food that we have all year long just like the yuca alcapurrias, crispy fried bacalaitos, or Puerto Rican-style chicken skewers.
If you had one of these before this recipe will bring you memories of eating probably with a malta. If not, let me tell you that the secret is in the toppings!
This hot dog is made with a simple bun, ground beef made in a Puerto Rican style and saute onions that are equally as good.

Why This Recipe Works
- You can have hotdogs for breakfast, lunch, or dinner and only one hotdog makes the perfect on-the-go meal!
- It is a recipe great for kids and adults as well.
Recipe Ingredients
- Hotdogs & buns- The hotdog is a matter of brand preference. The bun is usually the cheapest one you can find in the supermarket.
- Ground beef- The ground beef is made in a Puerto Rican style which is in part why the hotdog is so good.
- Onion- The onions are sauteed with a little bit of oil, tomato sauce some water, and adobo. They are a saucy addition to the recipe.
- Toppings- The common toppings are sauerkraut, potato sticks, mustard, ketchup, cheese sauce and some add mayonnaise.
How to Make A Puerto Rican Hot Dog
- Photo 1: Cut your onions into small cubes. Use a big pan and add the oil and onions to saute on high heat. You just want to make them sweat and brown them. Then add the water and tomato sauce and finish cooking.
- Photo 2: The common way to make these hotdogs is to boil them with the sauerkraut. But they’re super delicious cooked on the grill!
Assembly Of The Hot Dog
- The last step is to assemble the hotdog starting with the bun and hot dog. The order of the toppings is not important but this is how I like to do it. First add sauerkraut, onions, beef, and the amount of condiments that you prefer. Top it off with potato sticks.
Recipe Tips
- Put your condiments in squeeze bottles for easy use. It will make it easier to pour the right amount of each condiment.
- A super common way to eat these hot dogs in my house is without bread and in disposable cups. We call them “vasitos de hotdog“. That is how my partner used to get them in middle school from Joe who used to sell them this way in front of the school.

- Hotdog & bread- Usually the bread used is the most economical one. The hotdog can be the brand you prefer.
- Topping amounts- the quantity of each ingredient is just a suggestion but you can add more or less of your favorite topping.
- Cooking- the hotdog is usually boiled but you can grill, bake, or air fry it.
- Cups- You can make this recipe in disposable cups, just skip the bread! make layers of your favorite toppings until you fill the cup.
