    Why This Recipe Works

    • This is a recipe that you can customize to your own tastes.
    • It is a recipe that will cost less to make at home than to get takeout.

    Recipe Ingredients

all the ingredients needed to make a grilled chicken sandwich on a potato burger bun.
    • Chicken breasts- For the chicken, I used my pan-fried chicken breast recipe. Which you can pan fry or grill if you like.
    • Potato bread- For the bread, I always like to use potato burger buns, but you can use the bread you prefer. I also love using a brioche bun because the sweetness goes great with the saltiness of the chicken.
    • Mayonnaise- I go between the mayonnaise and the Puerto Rican mayo ketchup sauce. Any creamy sauce with a soft flavor will go well with this chicken sandwich.
    • Vegetables- I used the vegetables that I really think a chicken sandwich should have. I used romaine lettuce, tomato, and red onion. But here, there’s basically no way to go wrong. Add whatever you like.

How to Make A Classic Chicken Sandwich

collage of the steps needed to make a pan fried chicken sandwich on the left cutting the lettuce and cooking the chicken on the right.
    • Photo 1: Rinse all the vegetables you’re going to use. First, cut the ends of the lettuce and then cut it in half. Peel and cut the onion into about ¼ inch thick slices. Cut the tomato the same way. Of course, this is just a preference, so you can cut your toppings to the thickness you like.
    • Photo 2: Cut and season the chicken. In a large pan, add the breasts to cook for 5 minutes per side. Then toast your bread, add mayonnaise, and assemble the chicken breast sandwiches.

    Recipe Tips

    • Toppings. Popular toppings to add are bacon and different types of cheeses. My favorites are provolone, pepper jack, and swiss cheese.
    • This is a great recipe to make on pita bread!

    Instructions

    • Prepare the chicken. Remove any excess fat from the breasts and cut each breast into 2 pieces. Flatten each piece with a meat mallet or any heavy kitchen tool until the chicken has an even thickness. Season the chicken with the oil and all the seasonings.
    • Use a large pan over medium-high heat and wait for the pan to get hot. Once hot, add the chicken and cook for 10 minutes. Flip after 5 minutes.
    • Prepare the vegetables. Wash and dry the vegetables. Cut the romaine lettuce into 2 pieces per leaf. Cut the onion and tomatoes into about ¼ inch thick slices.
    • Assemble the sandwich. Toast the burger buns. Take each burger bun and add a tablespoon of mayonnaise. Place the chicken in the bun, the lettuce, tomato, and onion. Enjoy!

    Recipe Notes

    • I used a potato bun, but you can use your preferred bread.
    • You can use whatever toppings and condiments you like.
